The Leaks We Find With Dye Tests

Showers, ceilings, walls, floors and toilets, tested and priced before any work starts.

Yellow dye flooding a shower base seen through the screen, with the bathroom floor outside it, in Marsden Park

Shower Leak Dye Tests

The drain is plugged and the shower base flooded with dyed water, then we check the floor outside the screen and the room below for any trace of colour.

Water Through The Ceiling

A stain or drip on the ceiling under a bathroom. Dye in the shower, the bath and the toilet in turn shows which one the water is coming from.

Shower taps with their cover plates off, showing the holes in the tiles around the tap bodies in Prestons

Leaks Inside The Wall

Water behind the tiles from a leaking pipe or tap body. A pressure test on the hot and cold pipes shows whether they hold before any tiles come off.

Mouldy silicone along the base of a shower screen beside a strip drain in Blacktown

Failed Shower Seals And Grout

Worn silicone along the screen and cracked grout let water under the tiles. The dye test shows where it gets in, so the repair goes to the right spot on the leaking shower.

Leaking Floor Wastes

A floor drain that has pulled away from its puddle flange or cracked grout around it can leak into the floor below every time the floor gets wet.

Water pooled on the floor tiles around the base of a toilet in Kingsgrove

Toilet Leaks

Water around the base or through the ceiling below. Dye flushed down the toilet shows a leaking pan connection, and our toilet repairs fix what the test finds.

How Bad Is Your Hidden Leak?

Three signs of a hidden leak, from most to least urgent, and what to do about each.

Water Coming Through The Ceiling

Stop using the bathroom above, keep clear of any light fitting near the water and turn off the power at the switchboard if it is wet. Then call us to find the leak before the ceiling gives way.

Water On The Floor After A Shower

A wet floor outside the screen, swollen skirting boards or loose tiles mean water is escaping every time the shower runs. Use another shower if you can and book a dye test.

A Water Bill Higher Than Usual

Turn off every tap and read the water meter, then read it again an hour later without using any water. If the numbers have moved, water is escaping somewhere, so book a leak check.

Dye Testing And Leak Detection FAQs

Answer:

It depends on how much needs testing, one shower or a whole bathroom, and whether the pipes need a pressure test as well. The test is priced before we start, and once it finds the leak you get one fixed price for the repair. There is nothing to pay just for us to come and look during business hours.

Answer:

For a toilet, yes: put a few drops of food colouring in the cistern and wait about 15 minutes without flushing. If the colour shows up in the bowl, the cistern is leaking. Testing a shower properly means plugging the drain, flooding the base and pressure testing the pipes in the wall, which needs a plumber and a gauge.

Answer:

A dye test puts strongly coloured water into a shower, bath, toilet or drain, then looks for that colour where it should not be: on the ceiling below, in a wall, on the floor outside the shower or in a stormwater pit. Where the dye shows up tells us where the water is getting out.

Answer:

First we pressure test the pipes in the wall that feed the shower. Then we plug the drain, flood the shower base with dyed water and leave it to sit, check the walls and grout, and finally let the water run away to check the drain. Each step rules a cause in or out.

Answer:

Yes. Coloured dye poured into a downpipe, pit or drain shows where that water ends up, which helps find a broken or disconnected line. It is often paired with a camera inspection of the drain.

Answer:

The usual causes are a shower with failed waterproofing, grout or silicone, a leaking floor waste, a leaking toilet connection or a pipe leaking inside the wall. Dye and pressure tests show which one it is, so only the part that has failed gets repaired.

Answer:

Signs include a water bill higher than usual, a meter that keeps moving with every tap off, damp or mouldy patches on walls, skirting boards that swell or lift, loose tiles and a musty smell. Any of these is worth a leak check before the damage spreads.

Answer:

The dye test itself needs no cutting or digging, and the dyed water is drained away when the test is finished. If a ceiling below is already water damaged, a small section may need to be opened to see where the dye comes through.

Answer:

A clean result still tells you something: that shower, bath or toilet is ruled out. We move on to the next likely source, such as the pipes in the wall or the drains, and a drain camera can check where dye cannot show a result.
